Cell Culture Facilities
The MBC currently has four shared cell culture facilities available for use. These shared facilities are located in C305R.3, C305R.2, D309R.1, and D309R.2. Approved users may access the facilities as needed. Per best use practices as recommended by the CDC, NIH and ABSA and after consultation with Baylor’s Department of Environmental Health & Safety, UV bulbs located within all MBC laminar flow hoods are considered decommissioned components of the laminar flow hoods and will not be replaced (effective May 2013). Also, please note, back stock/bulk lab-specific items/consumables for cell culture may not be stored in the MBC shared cell culture spaces in order to avoid monopolization by individual research labs. Please plan accordingly. Researchers are expected to bring their supplies with them, take excess back to their main lab, and leave the shared space in a condition suitable for use by incoming researchers.

C305R.2 BSL-1 Cell Culture Facility
The C305R.2 shared cell culture facility is located within the main lab facility of the MBC and may accommodate research at the BSL-1 level only (as classified by Baylor’s Institutional Biosafety Committee). To obtain access to this facility, you will need approved card access to the MBC.
Room C305R.2 is outfitted with one certified Class II Type A/B3 Laminar flow hood, one CO2 incubator, one designated set of micropipettors, one designated Pipet-Aid, one automated cell counter, and a sink for handwashing. Because this BSL-1 facility is incorporated into the main MBC lab, this is an ideal area for undergraduates and individuals inexperienced in cell culture to work, as the Director of the facility is located close by to address questions/concerns. The MBC can offer basic training on good cell culture practices; however, in-depth cell culture training for graduate students/undergraduates/other researchers/etc., is the responsibility of the individual research lab. Standard operating procedures are in place for this facility and will need to be reviewed by any individuals interested in using the facility prior to conducting research.
As a BSL-1 cell culture facility, absolutely no organisms classified at the BSL-2 level may be handled directly or indirectly in this shared space.
C305R.3 BSL-2 Cell Culture Facility
The C305R.3 shared cell culture facility is located within the main lab facility of the MBC and may accommodate research at the BSL-2 level (as classified by Baylor’s Institutional Biosafety Committee). To obtain access to this facility, you will need approved card access to the MBC. Additionally, C305R.3 is a keyed room and you will need key access in order to use the facility (please contact the MBC Director at Michelle_Nemec@baylor.edu). Biosafety level 2 research involving human cell lines is currently being conducted in this shared space. For new research projects to take place in this shared space, the appropriate documentation and manuals must be approved by Baylor University's Institutional Biosafety Committee and submitted to the Director of the MBC prior to beginning research. Bloodborne Pathogen Training is also required prior to entry into this facility. For more details on this process and if this facility can accommodate your research, please contact the MBC Director.
Room C305R.3 is outfitted with two certified Class II Type A/B3 Laminar flow hoods, one CO2 incubator, one mini-fridge, one designated set of micropipettors, one designated Pipet-Aid, and a sink for handwashing. An inverted cell culture microscope is available in the adjacent lab space.
D309R.1 BSL-2 Cell Culture Facility
The D309R.1 shared cell culture facility is accessed through the Sterilizer Facility (D307), is classified as a Biosafety Level 2 work area, and is currently at capacity. To obtain access to this cell culture facility, you will need approved card access to the Sterilizer Facility. Additionally, D309R.1 is a keyed room and you will need key access in order to use the facility (please contact the MBC Director at Michelle_Nemec@baylor.edu).
D309R.2 BSL-2 Cell Culture Facility
The D309R.2 shared cell culture facility is accessed through the Sterilizer Facility (D307). To obtain access to the cell culture facility, you will need approved card access to the Sterilizer Facility. Additionally, D309R.1 is a keyed room and you will need key access in order to use the facility (please contact the MBC Director at Michelle_Nemec@baylor.edu).
Room D309R.2 is outfitted with two certified Class II Type A/B3 Laminar flow hoods, one CO2 incubator, one tabletop centrifuge, one inverted microscope, one designated set of micropipettors, one refrigerator/freezer, one waterbath, and a sink for handwashing.
